The NSW Pre-Learner Motorcycle Rider Training Course is held over two consecutive days (3.5 hours each). As a part of the HART experience, you will be provided with a manual motorcycle or auto scooter based on your preference. A helmet and gloves are also provided if you do not have your own.
The Pre-Learner Rider Training Course is competency-based, with strict pass/fail criteria. If all competencies are passed in order, you will be permitted to continue riding. Irrespective of their age or experience, all riders are required to complete this course per the requirements of TNSW.
Upon completion of this course, successful participants will be awarded a Certificate of Competence, which is required by Service NSW to do your Rider Knowledge Test. The Certificate of Competence you receive when you successfully complete the course is valid for 3 months.
To complete the NSW Pre-Learner Motorcycle Rider Training Course, you need:
To be at least 16 years and 6 months old.
You don't need to hold a NSW driver licence to apply for a rider licence, but you do need a TfNSW Customer Number. (Call TfNSW on 13 22 13 for more information)
On the day
Before your course, please plan to arrive at least 20 minutes before the scheduled start time. This is essential as you will not be allowed to join the course once it begins and course fees are non-refundable if the participant arrives late.
In preparation for this course, you should practice relevant skills by riding a bicycle and driving a manual car as a high level of balance, coordination, and concentration are required to ride a motorcycle. If you can’t, or it’s been a long time since you have, you may require time to progress through the training.
Throughout the course, you may be stopped by your instructor for your own safety or the safety of others. If you’re stopped from riding, the instructor will advise you of the best way to proceed with your training.

I have never ridden a motorcycle before, will I be able to complete this course?
This course is designed for people who have never ridden before, although we recommend practicing balance, coordination and concentration skills by riding a bicycle or manual car.
HART's RoadTech Private Lesson provides as one-on-one session, perfect for practicing the skills necessary for this course.
I don’t know whether to try a motorbike or a scooter. Which one should I use?
Only you can answer that question. Which would you prefer? Which one do you intend to buy?
If the answer is still unclear, we recommend you book a RoadTech Private Lesson with HART. These sessions provide an opportunity for riders to receive one-on-one tuition from one of our experienced instructors on a HART supplied motorcycle or scooter.
What happens if it is raining on the day?
If there is an extreme weather condition HART will make a call on the day otherwise we conduct training come rain or shine.
